Numeracy PD 29.2.12

Here are some resources from nzmaths that will hopefully support you get started with your numeracy teaching...

Expectations for number ...

The ALiM (Accelerating learning in mathematics) project has provided some resources for supporting struggling children. They give good examples of how to develop 'target' maths lessons across the levels. This will hopefully be added to in the future.

nzmaths also has resources for supporting bright sparks!

Teaching number knowledge...
The number framework identifies five knowledge domains:
  1. Number Identification, e.g. 5 means “five”, or 7/8 means “seven-eighths”
  2. Number Order and Sequence, e.g. the number after 16 is 17, or the multiple of 10 after 490 is 500
  3. Grouping and Place Value, e.g. 10 can be grouped as 7 and 3, or 23.4 is 234 tenths
  4. Number Facts e.g. 3 + 3 = 6, or the square root of 100 is 10
  5. Written Recording, e.g. use of empty number lines or written working forms.

Strategy (add/sub) being developed through following a problem progression (this is illustrated in the numeracy planning sheets)...

Stage 2-3 see pgs 21-25
 Stage 5 see pg18
Stage 6 see pg 20

Here is a short reading to get you thinking about the types of written recording you use with your children. There is a clear diagram giving examples of the forms of recording that should be modeled with counting, additive, multiplicative or proportional students.
